Welcome to the new WURFL DB

by Luca Passani

Friends,

I am proud to announce a new great initiative in the WURFL project, the WURFL DB, a web-based interface to allow WURFL contributors to add/fix device information in WURFL without waiting for the WURFL Maintainer (currently, truly yours Luca Passani) to do the job manually.
WURFL DB is avaiulable at the following URL:

Here is a few things you should know about the new system:

WURFLDB roles: User

The new WURFLDB has roles. As far as you are concerned, there are two roles: users and contributors. You do not need to have credentials to be a "user" and look up device information in the WURFLDB. Simply use the search boxes on the left to query the repository of profiles and find the relevant information about specific devices
. Admittedly, there is not much more you, except downloading the latest released wurfl.xml (which you can already do today on the WURFL website at sourceforge. If you are serious about contributing device information, there are a few things you can do. You can post your information on WMLProgramming at Yahoo Groups or you can send an email with the same info directly to me: .
If you are really really serious about contributing device info, you can ask me to make you contributor, which I will gladly do. Please read this guide about how to become a WURFL contributor. There are some requirements, but they all boil down to your commitment and will to do things right.

WURFLDB roles: User

A Contributor will have a user name and a password to login into the system and submit new device info.
When a contributor adds device information to WURFL, they get a chance to download a new wurfl.xml file which includes their changes right away. In other words, being a contributor means giving to the community, but it also means to be able to access and laverage the latest WURFL info before non-contributors.

WURFLDB Tutorial

This document will provide a proper introduction to the main WURFL DB features. It is recommended that users read it and it is required that contributors study it.
Questions about the functions of the WURFLDB can be posted on WMLProgramming at Yahoo Groups as usual. Enjoy.
